1. Install TV tuner with the TV
app software that it usually comes with and make sure it is working.

Note that MsDVR 2000 requires
Windows Driver Model (WDM)
drivers, but some TV tuner manufacturers has not been up-to-date with this new
technology and still rely on the old Video For Windows (VFW) technology. Eventually,
TV tuner manufacturer will have to support WDM drivers, since Microsoft
will eventually phase-out VFW or have done so already. If your TV tuner does not have WDM drivers, you
should contact your TV tuner manufacturer and request or demand it.
TV tuners usually comes with a TV
application. Makes sure it is working properly and make any necessary
adjustments, such as brightness, color, volume, etc.
You can test your TV
device and WDM driver by running this app:
http://www.maksil.com/test/amcap.exe
Make sure you can tune channels and
also select Video Input if your TV device supports it.
2. Install Windows Media Encoder 7.1
(WME) and
test that it works with your TV tuner.

A request to re-boot after installing
WME does not appear as it is not required, but if you run into some problems, it
may be a good idea to re-boot your computer, especially if you're using
Windows 98 or Windows ME.
If WME still does not work with your
TV tuner, it may be an indication that the WDM driver that was provide by your
TV manufacturer was not properly implemented nor tested to work with WME 7.1.
There's a chance that the problem may be caused by WME 7.1, however, it has been
downloaded 0.5 million times from CNET Download, and it has been released for
over a year without any patch releases.
Even if WME 7.1 does not work with
your TV tuner, there's still a chance that it may work with MsDVR 2000, since
there are additional code in MsDVR 2000 that will try to make it work, so proceed to install
MsDVR
2000 and give it a try.
3. Install MsDVR 2000
We have new installer starting with
version 1.1.214d released on January 10, 2003.
Existing
users must un-install version 1.1.214c or earlier (re-boot is not
required most of the time). Note that the installer for the previous version
will not remove your settings and the most important data, the schedule data
will be preserved. If you want to be extra careful before un-installing the
previous version, you can make a backup copy of the schedule data located here:
"C:\Program Files\MsDVR\Schedule.txt"
If the previous version is not installed from the default directory location,
C:\Program Files\MsDVR\, as it is allowed from the pervious installer, you
will have to copy the Schedule.txt to the default directory location with this
new installer. Changing the default directory location is not allowed with this
new installer for technical reasons.
Windows 98 Users:
The new installer
requires Microsoft Windows Installer 1.1 or later. If you're using
Windows 98 and you are not able to install, download Windows Installer here:
Windows Installer Redistributable 2.0 (Download Site)
If you have sound problems, go to you
computer's volume control and select Line-In from Record Control and insure that
Line-In is not muted from the Play Control.
Ok, in most cases you will not need
to re-boot, but if you run into problems, you may go ahead and re-boot instead,
especially if you're using Windows 98 or Windows ME.
Now, let's be realistic, personal
computers are not yet as easy to setup and configure by many users, and even for
advance and savvy users, they still run into tricky problems once in a while,
and that's the drawback. In most cases however, it will just work, and more so if you're using Windows 2000 or XP.
In case you need to un-install, go to
Control panel, then click on Add/Remove Programs icon, and look for MsDVR or
MsDVR 2000.
That's it! Let us know how it goes
and tell us your OS and TV tuner info. Enjoy!
